QUEEN’S PARK — The Select Committee on Emergency Management Oversight met for the first time Monday and Official Opposition House Leader Gilles Bisson is demanding the committee’s rules be changed.
“Premier Doug Ford gave himself unchecked, unlimited powers to sign government orders in secret for up to two years. The fig leaf on this unprecedented power grab was striking a committee, which will read those emergency orders well after they’ve been signed and enacted,” said Bisson.
“The committee has no power to stop or change any order Ford has signed. Ford will never be required to show up and answer questions. And the first meeting of this committee confirmed that no member of the committee has the right to even table a dissenting opinion. The rules of this sham committee have to be changed.”
The power Premier Ford is giving himself could be extended until the next election in 2022.
“Ford has used the tragic COVID-19 pandemic as cover to give himself unchecked power to cook up deals and schemes behind closed doors, and keep them secret from Ontarians until they’re a done deal.”
